This site is martindesaulles.com. It is run by me, Martin De Saulles. This page explains what information the site collects, why, and what you can do about it. I’ve tried to keep it in plain English.

What the site collects
Website hosting. This site is hosted by Hostinger. Like all web hosts, Hostinger’s servers keep automatic logs of visits, which include IP addresses, the pages requested, and the type of browser and device used. These logs exist to keep the site running and secure.
Analytics. I use Google Analytics to see how many people visit the site and which pages they read. This tells me things like which articles are popular and roughly which countries readers are in. It does not tell me who you are. Google Analytics places cookies on your device to do this, and the data is processed by Google, which may involve transferring it outside the UK.
I also use Google Search Console, which shows me how the site appears in Google’s search results. This uses Google’s own data rather than anything collected from you on this site.
Newsletter. If you sign up for my newsletter, I collect your email address and nothing else — no name, no other details. The newsletter is hosted and managed by Hostinger Reach, so your email address is stored on their system.
Why I collect it
I collect your email address only because you asked to receive the newsletter. That is your consent, and you can withdraw it at any time.
I use analytics because I have a legitimate interest in understanding whether what I write is being read, and in keeping the site working properly.
Server logs are kept because they are necessary to run and secure the site.
What I do with it
I use your email address to send you the newsletter. That’s all. I do not sell it, rent it, or share it with anyone else for their own purposes, and I do not use it to send you anything you didn’t sign up for.
Analytics data is only ever looked at in aggregate. I have no way of connecting it to your email address or to you personally.
Who else is involved
Three companies process data on my behalf:
- Hostinger — hosts the website and runs the newsletter service
- Google — provides Analytics and Search Console
- Automattic and the WordPress project — the site runs on WordPress software
Each has its own privacy policy governing what it does with data.
How long it is kept
I keep your email address for as long as you’re subscribed. If you unsubscribe, it is removed.
Analytics data is retained according to Google’s settings, which is currently a rolling period of a little over a year.
Server logs are kept for a short period by Hostinger as part of normal hosting operations.
Cookies
Cookies are small files stored on your device by websites you visit.
This site uses cookies for analytics, as described above. WordPress itself may also set cookies if you leave a comment or log in, but for ordinary visitors it generally does not.
You can block or delete cookies through your browser settings. Blocking analytics cookies will not affect your ability to read anything here.
Your rights
Under UK data protection law you have the right to:
- Ask what personal data I hold about you
- Ask me to correct it if it’s wrong
- Ask me to delete it
- Object to how I’m using it
- Ask for a copy of it in a portable format
For the newsletter, the simplest of these is built in: every email has an unsubscribe link, and using it removes your address.
Changes
If I change how the site collects or uses data, I’ll update this page and change the date at the top.
