There’s no shortage of bad and worrying news at the moment: climate crisis, economic meltdown, political instability etc etc.

However, this picture from an article in The Guardian a couple of weeks ago made me feel a little more cheerful. I can’t remember what the article was about but I keep thinking back to the people in the photo.
It was taken in Rome in 1946 and does not look staged. Despite having gone through years of war and, no doubt, many more hardships than most of us are used to, the 2 men look happy to be alive in the sun and chatting over some vegetables.
